'The bucket speech' - for a whole show

The Bucket Speech

Normally the 'bucket speech' - the bit where the performer of a free show asks the audience for donations - comes right at the end of a performance. But, as a one-off for charity, a comedian will perform a show that consists of nothing but a bucket speech.

Rory O'Keeffe has committed to perform a 55-minute show based entirely around the money-raising speech format.

The organisers explain: "The Bucket Speech. The show ends, the comedian picks up a bucket, and the audience decides whether they deserve to eat that day. It's forever a staple of the free fringes, familiar to audiences and comedians alike, but no one has ever done a show about it. Until now.

"One man (comedian Rory O'Keeffe) attempts to perform the bucket speech for an entire 55 minutes. It's probably a Guinness World Record but he's not bothering to invite them."

Luckily, O'Keeffe will have some help on the 14th August. Other Free Fringe favourites - including Kieran Hodgson and Matt Winning - will be in attendance offering support.

Lord Buckethead - the 'intergalactic space lord and independent parliamentary candidate for Maidenhead', who memorably featured in the same election line-up as Theresa May - will also be making an appearance.

The publicity for the show says: "Rory presents an anarchic hour celebrating the unsung hero, the bucket. Capturing the spirit of the Fringe (And the 'Spirit of the Fringe' #fingerscrossed), The Bucket Speech is more than just a bucket speech. It's an hour-long homage to free shows, and pointless endeavours. All proceeds (if anyone is left by the end) will go to charity."

The Bucket Speech is at The Voodoo Rooms on the 14th August at 6:15pm. "It's free to get in, but it's not free to get out."

Rory O'Keeffe: The 37th Question - the daily show in which O'Keefe will deliver a normal length bucket speech - is at The Banshee Labyrinth at 1:20pm from the 5th August.
