Is comedy subjective? Some people say it is. However, last year I did win the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. But this is my new show. So, as they* all say, 'it has to be good'. *Agents, promoters, reviewers, parents - just my mum, Dad left - colleagues, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, that guy I met at a party who turned out to work for Channel 4, the Bible (probably), the voice in my head and you reading this - especially you - why else would you read this if you don't want me to fail?

Ten must see Edinburgh Fringe shows I still need to see

It must be a good Fringe, we are halfway through and my list of must-see shows is now longer than it was when I arrived. Here's a run down of shows I'm still determined to find the time to see. In, I should add, no particular order.

Seven must-see comedy shows at the Edinburgh Fringe

Your laughter muscles duly rested by a diet of Dostoevsky and Adam Sandler movies throughout the early summer, you'll be ready and crying out by now for the comedic onslaught of the Edinburgh Fringe. Everywhere from street corners to enormo-venues, you'll find all kinds of people vying to make you think they're the most hilarious thing since internet videos of cats, be they stand-ups, sketch troupes, improvisers, absurdist performance artists or just plain freeform weirdoes. Let us help you sort the funny hahas from the funny hows by highlighting six shows we think will be definite winners this Fringe, from promising up-and-comers to senior stars.

Bechdel Testing Edinburgh Fringe festival

This month we're taking time out from holding Bechdel Theatre Festival conversations to Bechdel test some of the many (many, many) shows at the worlds biggest theatre festival in Edinburgh. We've been endorsing Bechdel test passing shows with stickers. Keep your eye out if you're looking at a wall of posters and want to choose something with women at the forefront to break up the overwhelming maleness of most of the festival scene. If you see this logo you can be sure that women are being represented.

Fringe & Just For Laughs: the same but very different

"Well," said Luca Cupani, "the Fringe is all on the shoulders of the performers. You do your show and, among the punters, there might be some industry people. But the industry it is hidden; you don't see them. In Montreal it is more visible - the industry. The companies, they promote the shows, they invite people and then the punters come. It is on the same level as Edinburgh but different."

Ten award-winning comics at the Fringe

A total of 65 comedy shows this Fringe use the phrase 'award-winning', though most fail to mention exactly what award they've won. Employee Of The Month? The figure shows what a plethora of comedy accolades there are out there. That's way more, even, than the 17 shows which say they are 'hotly', 'highly' or 'much' anticipated... So here's our pick of those award-winning acts.

Fringe preview: Sofie Hagen

I don't know how nervous performers get but I get pretty nervous sitting in the audience. Particularly when it is a relatively unknown comedian doing a free gig in a large venue that they hadn't initially planned to play. This was what happened to Sofie Hagen last year when there was a last minute venue switch.
