Nathaly Leduc: 10 Edinburgh Fringe questions
Nathaly Leduc and her friend Kanika answer 10 questions about their 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show.
Give us a quick overview of your comedy career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
Nathaly: This is my first ever solo comedy show and I'm really excited about it! I never intended to make comedy. The plan was to become a serious dramatic actor and make films... But then I met Philippe Gaulier and he ruined everything. One day during my first year at Gaulier, I picked up some Raybans and a cigarette and starting messing around with my housemate, pretending to seduce him in a husky voice. Our friend immediately said, 'oh my God - you're Shayne's Mom!' And so it began... I started playing around with her onstage and realised I had a lot of fun and audiences instantly loved her as a character. So after doing short spots at a string of comedy gigs in Berlin, London, Barcelona and Madrid, I decided to create a full-length show! I roped my friend Kanika in to write the show with me and direct... And here we are!
Kanika: We were two of least funny clowns at Gaulier - he once walked into the studio where we were rehearsing and said, 'ah, a conference of the bad clowns!' So of course the natural next step was to write a clowny character comedy show together... We both started off planning to have very serious careers as creators of very serious dramatic theatre, but it's all gone horribly wrong. Needless to say, we're having loads of fun! It's only just beginning so we're very excited about what comes next!
Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (but mix them up, keep us guessing!).
I once shook hands with Francis Ford Coppola. I speak fluent Spanish. I can't go to bed without showering.
Describe your new show in exactly 23 words.
A clown inspired, flirtatious character comedy that combines classic 80's kitsch with the eccentricity of summer camp movies - and verges on pure chaos!
Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
I set up a Tinder account for Shayne's Mom. She's certainly got some attention so far. But I've had to point out that she's a fictional character more often than I expected...
What's your plan for trying to eat - and drink - healthily during the Fringe?
I brought my mum along to stay with me! I was hoping I'd come home to healthy dinners and clean underwear every night but she's just been bringing me Chinese takeaways and beer. But she is a kick-ass flyerer - yesterday she tried to drag people off a bus into my show... So I can't complain!
What will you miss most while you're away from home?
The beach. Scotland is lovely but nothing beats some Brazilian sun...
Aside from performing, what else are you looking forward to doing in Scotland's fine capital?
I really want to hike up to Arthur's Seat. My flat is just around the corner from it so I see it everyday and am tempted to sack off flyering for a beautiful walk... Come see my show so I can go have a hike!
If you took over programming a Fringe venue, what would your perfect line-up of comedians be?
A lot of my friends from Gaulier are performing here this year and they are all hilarious! Luke Nowell, John-Luke Roberts, Elf Lyons, Nicola Cross and Neil Sinclair would be on my list for sure.
Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
The guy who messaged Shayne's Mom on Tinder the other day... Let's just say his idea of 'audience participation' is a little different to mine! All publicity is good publicity, right?
Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,800+ other Fringe offerings listed on BCG this year?
It's the only place you will get to experience naive clowny idiocy, filthy humour, intricately plotted sci fi, nostalgic 80s kitsch, hardcore rock n roll, and surreal insanity in one room. One of those is a lie. But there's only one way to find out which...
