Luke Kempner: 10 Edinburgh Fringe questions

Luke Kempner

Luke Kempner answers 10 questions about his 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show.

Give us a quick overview of your comedy career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I got started in 2012 by uploading YouTube clips of my impressions. Things really got going after I made made a video called Downstairs at Downton, which Stephen Fry went on to tweet about. From there, I came to Edinburgh with my first show The Only Way Is Downton, which I then took on a global tour, playing in a total of 8 different countries.

In 2015, I dived back into the comedy circuit and really worked on my stand-up. I wanted to be able to thread that through my new show Judi Dench Broke My Heart. I'm really happy with where I'm at. Still loads more to learn, but excited to be back at the ring with my second show.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (but mix them up, keep us guessing!).

1. My first pet Cat was in the film Alien.

2. Judi Dench did the raffle at my school.

3. I've never eaten an egg.

Describe your new show in exactly 23 words.

A fun show, filled with impressions, characters and singing. A bizarre love story which relays a celebrity-assisted quest to marry Dame Judi.

Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

I'VE MADE BADGES! They say 'I'M IN LOVE WITH JUDI DENCH'.

What's your plan for trying to eat - and drink - healthily during the Fringe?

Weeeeelll, my plan is to go swimming every day. I've managed 3 times so far. And eating healthily during the fringe is impossible. But i'm going to limit myself to 6 crepes a day.

What will you miss most while you're away from home?

The tube. I live with my wonderful mother-in-law when I do the fringe, but it's an hour commute on the bus. I miss the London tube for that reason! I'm longing to be snuggled into a sweaty armpit trying to read my metro.

Aside from performing, what else are you looking forward to doing in Scotland's fine capital?

Consuming as much haggis as I can. I will try and go to Tynecastle and see my beloved Hearts play. Also, as I said I get to spend time with my Scottish family.

If you took over programming a Fringe venue, what would your perfect line-up of comedians be?

Iain Stirling
Luke McQueen
John Kearns
Pappy's
Sooz Kempner
Birthday Girls
Seann Walsh
Alan Davies
Trevor Noah
Frankie Boyle
Tim Key

Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Tom Hiddleston. I don't know why, but I've never warmed to the fella. Maybe I should bump in to him and go for a pint to get over it.

Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,800+ other Fringe offerings listed on BCG this year?

Because it's fast paced! It's silly and it's heart warming. I sing songs from Les Mis and I try and marry Dame Judi Dench. You also get to see Frankie Boyle as a relationship councillor. There is something for everyone!! I promise.

'Luke Kempner: Judi Dench Broke My Heart' is at Pleasance Dome at 7pm until the 28th August. Listing
