Lara A King: 10 Edinburgh Fringe questions

Lara A King

Lara A King answers 10 questions about her 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show...

Give us a quick overview of your comedy career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

Unless you count countless hours of 'showing off' and 'trying to be funny' at various parties/nights out/family get togethers my actual 'career' began in May 2010 at the Brighton Festival. Two years later I won the Funny Women Award which gave me the impetus to take my comedy seriously. Apart from my lack of appearances on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week and my lifelong ambition, Just A Minute, I'm very happy with the journey I'm on. I have a few awards on the mantlepiece and a couple of decent jokes to my name.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (but mix them up, keep us guessing!).

1. Whilst at the Festival I will be camping in my 1976 neptune blue camper van, Patsy.

2. I was the body double for Melissa McCarthy in Tammy.

3. I was arrested and handcuffed at half one in the morning in Kensington High Street with my trousers round my ankles.

Describe your new show in exactly 23 words.

handcuffs, hi-vis vests, polystyrene cups, litter pickers, bombay sapphire, some regrettable swearing and a camper van called Patsy. Oh! Spoiled question 2! Sorry.

Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

My room is like a very intimate, dark space hotter than a sauna at the top of a spiral staircase. Anything could happen. It will make you lose weight.

What's your plan for trying to eat - and drink - healthily during the Fringe?

Ok, so. I'm camping and my show is at 11pm. I have NO excuse. I can have a healthy breakfast of cereal, berries and natural yoghurt; a light lunch of salad and protein with a sprinkling of nuts and sunflower seeds and a balanced evening meal before heading into town to perform.

I don't drink before a show so won't even have alcohol until after midnight by which time I'll probably just enjoy half a shandy and head home to put cucumber slices over my eyelids.

I will stick to this all month. I won't be led astray by noodles or haggis with neeps and tatties or 80 shillings ale or whiskey or deep fried mars bars... I won't. No.

What will you miss most while you're away from home?

Mostly I will miss my usual diet of noodles and haggis with neeps and tatties and 80 shillings ale and whiskey and deep fried mars bars.

Aside from performing, what else are you looking forward to doing in Scotland's fine capital?

Climbing up Arthur's Seat. Ooo, what have I said??

If you took over programming a Fringe venue, what would your perfect line-up of comedians be?

Victoria Wood. Julie Walters. Lucille Ball. Melissa McCarthy. Tina Fey. Dawn French. Jennifer Saunders. Laura Checkley. Rhona Cameron. Julie Jepson. Kerry Leigh. Zoe Lyons. Nessa Parkinson. My brother. (Token Bloke) Jayne and Michelle Graham McMorrow. Clare Plested. Suzy Bennett. Fascinating Aida. Catherine Bohart. Emily Lloyd Saini. Hannah Brackenbury. Julz Parker. Sandy Ellis. Some of them aren't comedians but they make me laugh....

Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

My mum. She doesn't know yet...

Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,800+ other Fringe offerings listed on BCG this year?

Because it might save their life.

'lara A king: Not Broken, Just Bent' is at Gilded Balloon at the Counting House at 11pm until the 29th August. Listing
