Edinburgh Q and A

UCL Graters answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

UCL Graters

William Orton, the producer of 2015's UCL Graters line-up and Fringe show, talks about 2015: A Sketch Odyssey.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

The UCL Graters have been running for a number of years, and we're following on from their run last year at the Fringe with Our Jackie. We're all new to the Fringe and we're massively excited to be here. All of us are relatively new to comedy and started this year but the show is looking nice and tight, it's getting laughs and I've only screwed up one tech queue so far!

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

An hour of fast paced sketches infused with an outlandish sci-fi theme and a spiced apricot brandy. Fast, spacey and very, very, delicious.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

As a producer, I absolutely love paperwork and emails. Therefore the sheer stress of the Fringe puts me in a near constant state of ecstasy. It's the closest I've come to true happiness in years.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

We did email Richard Branson about getting a space ship for promo material. But he said no.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Hopefully looking to break even, it's not really about the profit. (Even though the magazine that we're the sketch wing of would love some more money to print with, they'd really like some staples.)

6. What are you most looking forward to about your first Edinburgh Festival?

We're particularly looking forward to going out and seeing other shows, there are a couple of shows from UCL coming up so hopefully going out with them and seeing them. Also, seeing people enjoy something you've put so much work into really pays off.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Dead Man's Cellphone
Jabberwocky
UCL Comedy Club

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Stewart Lee
Al Murray
Monty Python
Marcus Brigstocke
Mitch Benn

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Inland revenue. Don't ask.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

The cast have written something absolutely fantastic this year, they've poured their hearts and not an insignificant amount of Carling into the show and it really shows. Not that it's drunk, it's just very good and involves Carling. But, is there another show featuring magical crabs, the world's worst superhero, a pop culture-obsessed wood nymph and space?

'UCL Graters - 2015: A Sketch Odyssey' is at 2:20pm at Just The Tonic at the Caves on 6-29 August. Listing
