Edinburgh Q and A

The Dead Secrets answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

The Dead Secrets

The Dead Secrets is a sketch troupe comprising of Phil Cotterill, Ida Berglöw Persson, Nathan Grassi, Chris Sugden, Will Payne and Jen Sugden. Here's their answers to our 10 questions...

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

The Dead Secrets formed as a sketch group in 2012 after a number of years performing improv together in Oxford. Since then our debut show Bulletproof Jest has won the Buxton Fringe Award for Best Comedy Show in 2014 and this year we were finalists in London Sketchfest. Our new show, The Curiositorium was nominated for the 2015 Buxton Fringe Best Comedy Show Award.

Are we happy with where we are at? Yes. We feel like we've achieved a lot in the last year or so, but there is still a very long way to go!

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

A labyrinthine sketch comedy adventure about a long forgotten, subterranean museum of curiosities and its absurdly bizarre inhabitants. Darkly fantastical nonsense. With hats.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

There is no other experience quite like it! It is a great opportunity to see other acts and get your show in front of new audiences. It is stressful, but it is totally worth it.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Promises of celebrity guest appearances* from Benedict Cumberbatch, Penelope Cruz and David Bowie.

*Please note that these are false promises, though we do provide some pretty terrible impersonations.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

We will probably lose all the money, in what our accountants have labelled a "staggeringly fiscally irresponsible move".

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Performing on one of the Royal Mile stages as a fake acapella group in front of a bemused crowd of people.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Too many to list, but we absolutely love Casual Violence (who will be up for a very limited run) and we are excited to see their lead writer James Hamilton's new solo show. Also: ZazU, Lou Conran and Tomás Ford's Crap Music Rave Party.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

This is a difficult one as we all have different tastes, but top of the bill would be Nick Mohammed as Mr Swallow (his Dracula musical last year was so funny we couldn't breathe!) We'd also want to see in there: French & Saunders, Chelsea Peretti, Fry & Laurie, and perhaps a Saturday Night Live spectacular hosted by Christopher Walken and featuring some of the greats: Lily Tomlin, Chevy Chase, Dana Carvey, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Andy Samberg.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Oedipus. He knows what he did.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

It's tough because there are so many shows that cater to all kinds of tastes and experiences, but if you like the idea of comedy adventures featuring surreal, dark, mysterious, and surprising characters in fantastical underground museums, then we're the show for you!

'The Dead Secrets Present... The Curiositorium' is at 2pm at Underbelly, Cowgate on 6-16, 18-30 August. Listing
