2015 Edinburgh Fringe

Edinburgh Q and A

Steve Bugeja answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Steve Bugeja

Steve Bugeja brings his first full show to the Fringe this year, and it's all a true - if incredibly creepy-sounding - story.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I am really enjoying my comedy career. I started in late 2010 while I was at University then managed to go full-time when I graduated in 2013. This was helped a lot by winning the BBC Radio New Comedy Award in 2013, which lead to loads of amazing opportunities (including supporting Russell Kane on his national tour and featuring on Radio 2 and Radio 4). So, yes, I am very happy with where I'm at. This year is my debut Edinburgh show, I have a mixture of huge excitement and crippling self doubt but I'm currently in a confident phase, as you can probably tell.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

I drove a man three hours across the country, alone, on his first time out of prison in 18 years. That's the show.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Mainly because I was told I had to. But I've genuinely really enjoyed writing the show, I think it helps that I've got a story to tell. I haven't had to stress about an 'ending' or anything like that, I just tell the story, which fortunately already has an ending.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

FREE ENTRY. I'm doing the newish Pay What You Want model, which means people can guarantee a seat by paying £5, or they can get in for free. So hopefully I'll get the best of both worlds.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I'm not thinking about it. Which is another reason I'm not that stressed. Stop trying to stress me out, guys.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Two years ago I did a Free Fringe gig with a few other people. One night, an odd bearded man in a long black trench coat was in the audience. Halfway through my set he got out a deck of cards and started performing card ticks to the rest of the audience. He was heckling me with a more interactive form of entertainment. Wasn't my best gig.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Annoyingly my 8pm showtime clashes with a lot of shows I want to see. But I am looking forward to catching Gein's Family Giftshop, Rhys James and Nish Kumar in particular.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Bob Newhart
Kevin Bridges
Lee Mack
Jimeoin

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

The odd bearded man in a long black trench coat.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Because I'm (probably) the only one telling a true story about the time I drove a convicted criminal across the country, on his first trip out of prison in 18 years.

'Steve Bugeja: Day Release' is at 8pm at Just the Tonic at The Mash House on 6-17, 19-30 August. Listing
