Edinburgh Q and A

Stephen Bailey answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Stephen Bailey

If you don't go and see Stephen Bailey's Edinburgh Fringe show, there's a good chance he'll be serving your popcorn next time you go to the cinema.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started comedy in 2011 and it has been quite the journey. I love it. It is one of those things where some people move up the ranks quicker than others but in the past couple of years I feel like it has become more of a career and I am thrilled. I've been lucky enough to do Big Brother's Bit on the Side, warm up the Loose Women and support Katherine Ryan on tour. All perfect for my act. And also, this year, I was accepted on to The Big Value Comedy Showcase, which I am so excited about. My aim is to get Darius Davis to show me his pecks nightly.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

It's all the Loose Women rolled up into one gay man. It's a massive gossip and at the heart it's about self-confidence.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

I love the Fringe. I don't love the cost but you have to invest in your career don't you? It's a great way to meet new comedians and new audiences and well that's it!! I also plan to use the time wisely and catch up some of my favourite Netflix shows while I am there and find me a Scottish boyfriend. London is not delivering.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

I will just talk AT people until they cave and give me my own way. Works with my dad.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Oh I will be bankrupt and so I'll see you at the cinema when I am serving you your popcorn.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

A guy came up to me after my show and said "I didn't want to see a gay guy but you were actually great" - that was the biggest backward compliment I've ever had and it left me speechless, which is WEIRD.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

For me - it's all about my girls. I want to see Katherine Ryan, Diane Spencer and Jayde Adams. AND we gays got to stick together so I am looking forward to seeing Joel Creasey, Rhys Nicholson and David Mills.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Oh - this is so hard, I would want me, Katherine Ryan, Kathy Griffin, Joan Rivers, Lisa Lampanelli, Chelsea Handler.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

A unicorn - because then I know the Fringe has affected me.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Audiences should pick my show because I need the money and for people to know I exist. In all seriousness, they should come to my show because it's not MY show, it's OUR show - me and the audience are a fantastic double act and I really look forward to meeting them.

'Stephen Bailey: Should've Been a Popstar' is at 4:15pm at Pleasance Courtyard on 5-18, 20-30 August. Listing
