Scott Bennett answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Scott Bennett

Scott Bennett admits he's going to drag his wife and daughter into the marketing machine for his show...

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started comedy in 2009, my first gig was a gong show above a pub in Nottingham and I was absolutely terrified. This changed as soon as I got on stage though; I knew it was something I wanted to do. I have always been a huge comedy fan, it is more important than music for me. I remember the first time I listened to Derek and Clive and the first time I watched The Day Today. It had such an impact on me, its escapism at its best and it's still a massive part of my life. I met my wife through a mutual love of I'm Alan Partridge!

This is my fifth year performing stand-up and you can never stop learning, I still have a long way to go, but to take a debut show to the fringe and be booked by many of the bigger clubs in the country is a great feeling.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

I have a dad who is an endless source of comedy gold; this show is his greatest hits. He is the ultimate Yorkshireman.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Well, I think it's only stressful if you forget that it's a positive thing you are doing and that you should be enjoying it. Please don't quote me on that though; there is every possibility that by week three I'll be found crying into my flyers in the pouring rain on the Royal Mile. I suppose the reason is because I love stand-up comedy, if I wasn't performing I would be there as a regular punter.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Show-themed hoodies for my wife and daughter to wear. They are here for a holiday, but won't be able to escape this marketing machine. I will also be giving away a card after each show which has my dad's top tips on how to approach a carvery; once you have this knowledge Sunday dinner will never be the same again.

I am also doing a "Pay What You Want" at the venue for the show. Punters can buy a ticket in advance to guarantee entry, or chance it at the venue. I expect all of my Yorkshire brethren will take that second option.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Difficult to say, all I know is that we could have probably gone to Disneyland. Don't tell my daughter that though. Besides, staying in a caravan whilst daddy embarks on his expensive vanity project is the perfect way for any child to spend the summer holidays.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Performing at 2.30 in the morning in a crypt to 10 people; most of who were nodding in and out of consciousness. They weren't very receptive to upbeat stories about the perils of bin collection day.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Seymour Mace
Funz and Gamez Tooz
Gein's Family Giftshop
Ian Crawford

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore doing a live podcast as Derek and Clive; Harry Hill; Jerry Seinfeld; and Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge on hosting duties.

Scott Bennett: About a Roy (Stories About Me Dad). Scott Bennett

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

My dad. Things will never be the same between us after this show; It's going to be an awkward Christmas!

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

The themes in it are universal, most of us have had a Dad at some point; they are quite popular. I am aware I am probably not the only comic this year wringing out his family members for comedic purposes, but I can assure you I am the only one generous enough to share with you some of his best Yorkshire "life hacks" some of which will blow your mind.

In all seriousness, this is my first hour show and I am really proud of it. In terms of debuts I like to think of it like a rock band, this is the first album, come see me whilst I'm still hungry for it. I've spent the best part of five years driving up and down the country with only energy drinks to sustain me. If things take off ten years from now I could have hit the big time and afford to buy the occasional pasty too.

'Scott Bennett: About a Roy (Stories About Me Dad)' is at 4:20pm at Just the Tonic at The Mash House on 6-17, 19-30 August. Listing

Scott will also be hosting The Big Value Early Showcase daily; and appearing in All Killa No Filla Podcast on the 10th August.
