Samantha Baines & Helen Sorren answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
Comedy 'duodom' Samantha Baines and Helen Sorren talk about their careers and comedy partnership.
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
We are Samantha Baines and Helen Sorren and we have been together in duodom for almost two years. We have been out there on the internet with a little video called Busy Battle, which over 13,000 of you watched - thanks! We are out there on the Hoxton airwaves presenting the Saturday breakfast show on Hoxton Radio, Sam and Helen: Ladies What Brunch. Now we will be out there in Edinburgh for our first show as a twosome.
Samantha Baines is an award winning comedian and actress. Sam has been acting in comedy for 7 years and started stand-up in [y]2013[/i]. A What the Frock Best Newcomer Award Winner 2015 and Funny Women Finalist 2014, Sam also plays silly characters on TV (Lee Nelson's Well Funny People, Hank Zipzer, Doctors). She also chats funnies on XFM, Radio 4 and BBC London and she writes funnies for Huffington Post Comedy.
Helen Sorren is a Leicester Square New Act of the Year, Golden Jester and Funny Women semi finalist 2014. Already a recognisable face on the London comedy circuit after starting stand-up in 2013, Helen has worked with a number of high profile theatre directors and is the go to girl for 'Goddy' stuff having performed for the Pope in Hyde Park and recently fronted a new DVD series for distribution across the UK as well as starring in Eden's Not as the World Gives, which now has over 85,000 views on YouTube.
We are having a lovely old time being out there in comedy. We have interviewed some amazing inspiring women on our radio show and we get to meet brilliant audiences and comedians which is really the best bit. Obviously when our TV show is commissioned we will be even happier (any commissioners out there?)
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
Sam and Helen are Out There, they think. Bring your invisible sledgehammers and your best singing voice and experience science, pants and disco.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
Because we are ridiculous and we decided to do it over cocktails? No, it's because the Edinburgh Fringe is one of the most intense but marvellous months and we wanted to be part of all that and because we love seeing our faces on flyers.
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
We have an awesome flyering team of amazing female comedians who are going to bully people into coming. Also we give away free pants at the weekend!
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
Make? Ha. Lose - depends on how well our lady flyering team do!
6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?
Sam used to be in a sketch group and an audience member once brought along some pants for her to sign after the show. Then she had a photo with him and his mum and the pants. That was pretty surreal.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Helen is the organised one so she already has an itinerary. On the list are: Aisling Bea, Katherine Ryan, Bridget Christie, Sofie Hagen, Jessica Fostekew, Jessie Cave, Dane Baptiste, Bec Hill, Lolly Defoe, Austentatious, Julian Deane, Beasts. Oh dear there probably aren't enough men on this line up.
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
Wow hard question. Probably all of the above plus Sara Pascoe. Yep it's an all nighter.
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Brian Cox because Sam would jump on him and then she'd probably be arrested and Helen has no money left to bail her out.
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Because we are nice and it will be fun and it's pay what you want on the door cheapskates.
'Sam and Helen: Out There' is at 6:20pm at Just The Tonic at the Caves on 6-17, 19-29 August. Listing
