Rhys Nicholson answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
We talk to Rhys Nicholson and almost make him quit comedy with our first question. Oops.
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
I started doing comedy in 2009. Well, I mean I stood in front of people and spoke in 2009 but I probably wasn't comedy until 2011.
I guess I'm happy with stuff? Should I be? Christ. Am I happy? Is anyone? What is happiness? Wow, never before has a Q&A so quickly sent me into a spiral of existential crisis. Thanks guys, I think I just quit comedy.
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
I don't know what I'm doing but people seem to be liking it. There are plenty of tickets left. Seriously, just come please.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
I want to give the precious gift of laughter. Ha, kidding. It's mostly an ego thing. I can go back home and tell people I've done it. Also I was looking at a pile of cash I made this year in Australia and just thought, hey, what's the quickest and least pleasant way I could get rid of this?
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
I was thinking I might give working hard and having an ok show a go. If that fails, tell people I'm La Roux.
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
I think I will lose 800,000 Australian dollars (£500).
6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?
Once last year I woke up at 8am completely sober and not hungover. So weird.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Pajama Men
Phil Wang
Joel Creasey
Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
Maria Bamford
Kyle Kinane
Paul F Tompkins
Sara Pascoe
Pajama Men
Amy Schumer
James Acaster
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Me, sent back from the future to tell me I shouldn't have done that Q&A for Comedy.co.uk because it started a war.
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Statistically they probably shouldn't. But I think you should come because I'm quite happy with my show and if you don't come, it's very awkward for me. You've probably got nothing else to do anyway.
'Rhys Nicholson - Forward' is at 8:20pm at Udderbelly, George Square on 5-31 August. Listing
