Edinburgh Q and A

Omar Hamdi answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Omar Hamdi

Welsh-Egyptian comedian Omar Hamdi talks about bringing his first ever show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started comedy in 2012. So far, I've toured the country supporting Russell Kane, been on BBC Three a couple of times, and become a Radio 2 regular. I've also performed at hundreds of grimy yet magical little comedy nights you've never heard of, honing my craft night after night. I'm happy with where I'm at - but I'm just getting started. This Edinburgh is like my launch party.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Watch an Egyptian boy from Cardiff struggle to make sense of his mind, his manhood and his life - not necessarily in that order.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

I don't think I'm going to find it stressful. I think people find it stressful because they feel they have to take a show to Edinburgh when they're not ready, or their heart's not in it because they'd rather just play clubs. Everyone was telling me to do a debut show last year, and I could have done a good show last year, but I've waited till I've got something that is really worth seeing. So I'm not stressed, just excited to show people what I've been working on every day and every night for the last 3 years.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Be really funny for an hour. Is that cunning enough? *STARTS GETTING STRESSED, REGRETS ANSWER ABOVE*

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I have no idea. But in the short term, I'm really not thinking about money. You can't ask a creative to think about money, just like you can't ask a banker to be a creative (unless they're working on the Greek deficit).

6. What are you most looking forward to about your first Edinburgh Festival?

Not having to travel more than 15 minutes to a show. No trains for a month!

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

There are too many to list. That's what makes Edinburgh special - there's a super concentration of super talented performers fermenting in a petri dish of bliss. Having said that, I don't usually watch too many shows in Edinburgh - I focus on resting, so I can give 100% when I'm on stage.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Oh that's a tough question! There are so many acts I find funny. Sometimes I drop into a tiny open mic night in London to try out some new material and find out that that brilliant act I'm following is doing their 3rd gig ever.

Not sure about line-up, but the format would be something that took stand-ups out of their comfort zone - something like Set List.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Either of my parents, because a lot of the show is about them and I wouldn't want to get too close to my subject matter!

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Earlier today I had a session with a big-name choreographer at English National Ballet to perfect the show's finale. How many comedians can say that? At the very least you'll get to see someone who can't dance try to dance, and if YouTube has taught us anything, it's that people who can't dance trying to dance is FUNNY.

'Omar Hamdi: In the Valleys of the Kings' is at 10:20pm at Assembly George Square Studios on 5-30 August. Listing
