Edinburgh Q and A

Milo McCabe answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Milo McCabe

Milo McCabe tells us about the time he was punched outside The Caves, and more...

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started around 2004 doing conventional stand-up and got away with it for a while, but then switched to doing character stuff and found it immeasurably more satisfying. I am lucky enough to be a full time working comic who gets to indulge his more left field side in Edinburgh every year, away from the more 'stick and move' style of clubwork. I've also started to get a few diddy TV bits too, which is nice (albeit mostly playing Spanish Policemen). So no, not happy.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Genesisocide is a one man sketch narrative about a cuckolded Greek man who travels back in time to kill Phil Collins. The prick.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Because I love it and almost everything about it. It's great seeing the friends you normally get to see at occasional club weekends, every day for a month, all in the same place.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

I'm horrible at self-promotion. This questionnaire is 100% of the PR I'll have done this year. I'm relying on word of mouth and flyering.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I never ever ever add it up. Just keep all the receipts, put them in an envelope and pretend none of it happened.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Getting punched in the face with a camera by a hefty Glaswegian girl outside Bannerman's in 2011, after I jumped in to stop her bashing her mate's head against the wall. I went home with a black eye and my friends told me that ten minutes later they were hugging under the bridge arch there, probably slagging me off. It was a proper, full on overhand right. Thirty people by The Caves went 'ooooohh' simultaneously. It was like YouTube live.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Bobby Mair, Chris Stokes, Kai Humphries and Daniel Sloss. Friends yes, but disgustingly talented friends. Chris Stokes has a wonderful show this year that I've seen about six times, but it still gets me.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Joey Diaz (Joe Rogan's support act)

Patrice O'Neale

Dave Chappelle

Dangerous T MC'ing

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Fuckface girl who chinned me in 2011. Not because I'd retaliate in any way, just that the discussion about why she was wrong would be tedious, she might not recognise me and it might not be her in the first place.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Because I genuinely believe there hasn't been a show like the one I'm doing this year... I've lacerated my hands several times, had numerous walkouts and work so hard over the 55 minutes that I've looked visibly thinner at the end of a preview. I've also never had as much of a positive reception as this show gets in previews. It's very divisive. It's also absolutely stupid. But lots of fun.

'Milo McCabe: Genesisocide' is at 5:15pm at The Counting House on 6-30 August. Listing
