Edinburgh Q and A

Mathilda Gregory answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Mathilda Gregory

Mathilda Gregory talks a little about her show, all about being fat.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I'm a performer and comedy writer. I used to do stand up in my 20s, I started in 1991, but then I stopped performing for a really long time. Last year I came back to Edinburgh after a 13 year gap with Werewolf Erotica, She Wrote, the title of which explains what I was doing while I was away.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

A show for Every Body. This show is about being fat. There'll be a Guess My Weight competition. I am the prize. Sorry.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

I have something to say about fat bodies that I think isn't being said.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

I am going to take my Guess My Weight competition onto the streets.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I should break even if I've done my sums right.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

The time shift is bizarre. When you start arranging to meet people at 2am like that's a perfectly normal time to meet up.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

I have lots of friends doing shows. I'm really keen to see Desiree Burch's Tar Baby, Cameryn Moore's shows, Dave Pickering's What About the Men and Joe Hart's show. I'm also really excited about the Forest Fringe programme, especially Selina Thompson.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Joe Hart, Samantha Mann, Chris Evans, Richard Armitage, Cher and me.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

My director David Byrne. We're terrible enemies.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

It's about bodies. If you have a body, you'll enjoy it.

'How to Be Fat' is at 6:55pm at ZOO Southside on 7-16, 18-31 August. Listing
