Edinburgh Q and A

The Make 'em Ups answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

The Bumper Blyton Improvised Adventure

The Make 'Em Ups, the 'supergroup' improv team behind 'The Bumper Blyton Improvised Adventure', answer our 10 questions.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

Between us we have a little over 52 years of Improv comedy experience, though we're not sure this makes us the oldest people at the Fringe to be wearing shorts and sandals.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Brand-new retro improv comedy show inspired by the back catalogue of the nation's favourite children's author, Enid Blyton. A new story each day.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

A ghost with whitish-blue hair appeared to us one day after dark. It had a clipped 1940's accent and its name sounded something like "Sheenid Fryton". It ordered us to spend our summer recreating every one of her books on stage. Nobody questioned how a ghost from the 1940's had heard of the Edinburgh Fringe, though she did have some interesting opinions on #Cowgateheadgate.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Scones, Jam, Ginger beer. In their tummies.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

We've spent quite a lot on set and costume for an improv show, and are even plastering The Counting House in bunting each day, as well as treating our audience to afternoon tea as we want them to feel as though they are immersed in Jubilee spirit. We've spent hundreds of pounds Stirling, but foolishly are asking our Free Fringe Audience to donate in imperial old money. This may have been an oversight.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Our weirdest past Fringe experience was climbing up to Arthurs Seat and seeing a dozen (what can only be described as) grown men, competing in an egg rolling competition down the hill. What a waste of good picnic tucker.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Anything about the Queen, or marbles or about cakes. If there is a show about the Queen of marble cakes, we're sold. Failing that we will go to all of the shows that are handing out flyers on the Royal Mile, just so long as they have the Queen in them. Or cakes. Or marbles.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Basil Brush, Sooty, Andy Pandy, Gordon The Gopher, Edd the Duck, George and Zippy, Bill and Ben, Roland the Rat, Emu and Orville. However, Timmy Mallet's moaning incontinent sidekick Pinky Punky would not be invited due to health and safety reasons, furthermore he stole his entire act from Stewart Lee.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Enid Blyton's ghost... or worse, her lawyers.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

The Make 'Em Ups, who form Bumper Blyton, have been called a 'supergroup' of performers. The cast are made up of some of the most experienced and brilliantly talented performers on the circuit. Between us we have 2 Funny Women finalists, 1 Musical comedy finalist, an Olivier Award and a Chortle Award. As well as being founded by members of the biggest groups UK improv; [l]Austentatious[f/], Showstopper, The Free Association and Upstairs Downton.

However, we are putting the show on as part of Laughing Horse's Free Festival as we really love the show and adore the source material and want as many people to be able to access it as possible.

'The Bumper Blyton Improvised Adventure' is at 4pm at The Counting House on 6-20 August. Listing
