Luke Stephen answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
'Love, Life, and the Lord' are the topics covered by Luke Stephen's debut Fringe show...
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with how it's all going. I've been doing stand-up for 8 years now and still love it. In truth it could be going better, but then again I could be trying harder at it. So yeah, me at this years Fringe is my trying harder now.
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
It's about being single in your 30's and being rubbish at life whilst your friends are getting married, having children and buying houses.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
I don't find it stressful at all. I enjoy it. People often say 'I don't know how you can do it,' but honestly stand-up is so much fun. There's nothing like getting an audience on your side and having them laughing all the way. And besides I have nothing else to do with my time, literally all my friends are married and are spending the summer with their families. It was either do this or sit indoors and cry.
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
I'm going to run around the streets of Edinburgh naked with the title of my show painted across my body. Or I'll be handing out flyers. I haven't quite decided yet.
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
It's a free show and my first time at the Fringe so I am absolutely only going to lose money on this. Well, lose money isn't the right term really. Happily spending would be more accurate. For me the Fringe is an extreme case of retail therapy, I'll have no money after the experience but I'll be happy and pleased that I've done it. Hopefully.
6. What are you most looking forward to about your first Edinburgh Festival?
I'm looking forward to just being part of the whole experience and gigging every night. I've a lot of friends are doing shows this year too, so I can't wait to see them all doing their thing.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Kate Lucas, Fern Brady, Joel Dommett and Lloyd Griffith. All very funny people.
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
One night only. MC would have to be Jim Jefferies, Chaplin could open with a 10 minute at the top, Jerry Seinfeld in the middle and Louis CK to close. Funny little night right there.
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Tony Blair. Imagine if he bumped into me and quite liked me, and kept coming to my show, it would be a nightmare. It would be different if it 1997 and he wanted to be my mate. Even Noel Gallagher liked him them.
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Well don't just come to Edinburgh and only see my show, that would be straight up crazy. But they should come and see the show, as I think it appeals to most. If you're approaching your thirties or if you're in them already your friends will be getting engaged, married and having babies. You're probably on your fourth wedding this year. This show is about that time in your life while systematically ruining every relationship you have through your own stupidity. And if you are one of the married ones, this is an insight into the life of that solitary single friend you have.
'Luke Stephen: Peace, Love and Not Understanding' is at 11:15pm at Cowgatehead on 8-17, 19-29 August. Listing
