Luca Cupani answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
Rising star Luca Cupani is back at the Fringe for 2015, and this time he's performing on a bus. Really.
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
I started comedy last year (February 2014, my first ever gig was at the Gong Show of the Comedy Store in London and I won it!) and... yes, so far I'm happy. In a year and a half I've performed a solo-show at the Edinburgh Fringe, I've been at the Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival and now I look forward to performing at this Fringe 2015!
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
Well... I start talking, I mix bizarre observational humour with stories and improvisation, and hopefully at some point audience members should start laughing.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
Because it's unique, unbelievable! Yes, it rains 7 hours a day... and yes, it's cold... but you get the chance to see the best (and sometimes the worst) of comedy, theatre, dance, performance art. And it's exciting to be caught between the hope of making a breakthrough and the fear of having a breakdown.
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
I think that the venue itself will attract punters, because it's new and special: I'll be performing in the BlundaBus, a lovely double-decker bus that is run (and literally driven) by Bob Slayer. There will be funny shows upstairs and a proper bar downstairs... can you resist?
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
I'm greedy and ambitious, I aim to break even.
6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?
Last year, during a late night show, a random punter (a young woman) conducted a prostate exam on the performer... using a builder's glove.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Nina Conti, Tim Fitzhigham, Tim Renkow, Katsura Sunshine and many more...
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
Ellen De Generes, John Oliver, Michael McIntyre, Nina Conti, Stewart Lee and Daniel Kitson.
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Dr Death, because I've heard that he is bringing to the Fringe "Destiny" (his euthanasia machine) for people to try out...
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Because the venue is a lovely bus (have I told you?) and because critic Kate Copstick said that I "might be something of a comic genius".
'Luca Cupani: Still Falling' is at 5:45pm at Heroes @ Bob's BlundaBus on 5-11, 13-25, 27-31 August. Listing
