LetLuce answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
Join Lucy Pearman and Letty Butler together and you get LetLuce. They're performing a show called 'Sea Men (A Naval Tale)' this year...
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
Lucy's career started in The Chipping Norton Theatre aged 7, when she played a bearded male villager in Mother Goose. The first time Letty got on stage, she promptly fell straight off it and into the orchestra pit during a matinee of The Gingerbread Man when she was three.
We met at LAMDA in 2007 where we trained to be thespians. We got bored of waiting for the RSC to call, so we pretended to be a double act in order to get in front of Steve Bendelack (director of Mighty Boosh/French & Saunders) who was casting an advert. Curiously, we got it. On the shoot we came clean and admitted we weren't a double act. Steve said "Well you're pricks if you don't become one - write a show and get yourselves to Edinburgh". So we did. Are we happy? Nearly.
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
Surreal harmless nonsense, an absurdist voyage, escapism minus the hangover, rip-roaringly jolly, nautical but nice, charmingly chaotic, weirdly relaxing, upliftingly anarchic and stupid.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
It's unclear. But we are probably at our funniest when we are knackered, poverty stricken and 'slightly' hung-over.
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
Large scale kidnappery.
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
Probably circa £5000. Each. So that's terrific.
6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?
When Andy Bell of Erasure came to see Show Pony last year after Lucy flyered the shit of him thrice in one day.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Spencer Jones, Ali Brice, Paul Foot, Luisa Omielan, James Acaster, Michael Brunstrom, Marny Godden, Pat Cahill.
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, Tommy Cooper, French & Saunders, John Kearns, Vic & Bob, Nina Conti, Tim Key, Peter Kay, Daniel Kitson. We'd also quite like there to be dancing involved throughout.
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Gabrielle, we absolutely massacre her epic number Dreams during the show.
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Because we genuinely don't think there's another show like it. And we really, REALLY just want to cheer everyone up. Ourselves included.
'LetLuce in Sea Men (A Naval Tale)' is at 4pm at Just The Tonic at the Caves on 6-17, 19-29 August. Listing
