Edinburgh Q and A

Javier Jarquin answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Javier Jarquin

Javier Jarquin is a card ninja. No, really. Read on...

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I did my first gig as CARD NINJA in 2009 whilst doing some cabaret/variety shows in Melbourne. I turned it into a full show for the New Zealand Comedy Festival in 2010 and the World Buskers Festival in 2012 - it won awards in both festivals. This will be the 3rd time I've taken it to Edinburgh where it has won zero awards. I also have a straight stand-up comedy career. Switching between the two keeps me happy.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Man desperately wants to be a ninja but has spent years training with playing cards instead of proper ninja weapons. Things get interesting.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

God knows. This will be my 6th Edinburgh and I guess I'm a slow learner. That or I am the Fringe's captive and I've developed a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Tell them my show is an avant-garde Shakespeare reimagining. Lock doors.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Haha. Make money. Good one.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

My first year, there was a psychic (off the telly) who was doing the Fringe. They were so terrible, people would ask for refunds. My wife and I would go watch their show when we were having a bad day to cheer ourselves up. I know it's not nice to use someone else pain as your pleasure but psychics are pricks.

That or having to follow a steaming drunk Terry Alderton at Late 'N' Live - he said he wanted to go die on his arse. 10mins later the audience nearly carried him off.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

All of them and Matt Price, Milo McCabe and Tim Renkow.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Jarred Christmas, Mickey D, East End Cabaret and aforementioned bad psychic.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Jollyboat - don't get me wrong, they're great guys but during the Fringe, the whole Pirates Vs Ninjas thing, if we meet we HAVE to fight to the death. They've been warned.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

No other show will feature a guy throwing cards and telling ninja jokes. If there is, you should go to it. That sounds awesome.

'Card Ninja' is at 3:45pm at Sin on 7-16, 18-23, 25-30 August. Listing
