Islands answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions
Two of the Fine Mess theatre group, Kyle Ross and Eva Tausig talk to us about their 2015 show, Islands.
1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?
Kyle: Five years as an actor for hire before forming Fine Mess last year. Very happy to now have a creative outlet, although very much still available for hire.
2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.
Eva: Made in Chelsea under the microscope. Ice buckets, Tough Mudders and Fifty Shades violently collide. Theatrical WhatsApping. A proposal live on stage. Maybe.
3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?
Kyle: For the money.
Eva: For the tan.
4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?
Kyle: We're in tandem with another Fine Mess show, Divas, at the Pleasance, which is great. So when they sell out, they'll send their surplus our way.
5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?
Eva: I've got Kyle under contract for my pay. Beyond that, I'd like for him to be able to get home at the end of the month.
Kyle: If we break even we'll have a party. A 'break even' party. Genuinely excited at the prospect of that.
6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?
Kyle: Flyering for a show I was in about Leonardo Da Vinci. My colleague got so frustrated by lack of interest she starting telling people it was about Lenonardo DiCaprio. People flocked to see it. They left after five minutes, but still. Can't fault the ingenuity.
7. What other shows are you hoping to see?
Eva: David O'Doherty. Kyle has promised me top LOLS.
Kyle: Angelos Epithemou and Barry from Watford's one off. Guilty pleasure.
8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?
Kyle: Helm, Kitson and Key. And Paul Foot. Love that guy.
9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.
Kyle: My Fine Mess co-founder who will go unnamed for safety reasons was playing a game in the Pleasance Islington foyer during our previews. The game was to pick up the Fringe guide, pick a random show and say the name out loud. He did so, declared it was the shittest title in the world and immediately got dirty looks. Guess which show was rehearsing in the Pleasance that day... Like a 3000/1 chance. Unbelievable.
10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?
Eva: Low levels of clothing and a botched sex scene, which is a must see. It really hurts to plug it, but if I'm going to do it I may as well do it to packed houses. Right Kyle?
Kyle: Yep.
'Islands' is at 12:10pm at Underbelly, Cowgate on 6-17, 19-30 August. Listing
