Edinburgh Q and A

Dave Chawner answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Dave Chawner

Dave Chawner is heading to Edinburgh with Normally Abnormal, a comedy show about identity, recovery and life after eating disorders.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I have been doing comedy for the past 7 years. I began in Southampton and made the move to London to become a part of the scene there.

I particularly love doing festivals and love fringe shows that are unique, interesting and honest. I did a show in 2014 about my battle with anorexia, in 2015 I took it around all the major festivals. This year I am doing a show about identity and recovery.

I always want to be further on from where I am but I always try to be happy with where I am rather than jealous about where I'm not!

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Using comedy to help make mental health and eating disorders more accessible and to take more a thought-provoking look into identity and mistakes.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

I love the unique ability comedy has to reach people. When I was suffering I wish someone could have spoken about eating disorders in a normal way. However, it was either sensationalised or spoken about in hushed muted tones. I find it incredibly cathartic to do the show and enriching to hear peoples' stories and help them overcome what can be a life-taking disease.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Too much to think about!

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Crowd surfing out of Maggie's Chamber's only to be dropped on my head because one of the rows decided to go to the bar.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Robin Williams, Dara O Briain, Louis CK.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

The devil.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

I don't like to compete with other shows. There's so many going on, don't limit yourself to just one, go see them all!

'Normally Abnormal' is at 7pm at The Counting House on 6-30 August. Entry is free. Listing
