Edinburgh Q and A

Dane Baptiste answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Dane Baptiste

Dane Baptiste talks about bringing his new show, Reasonable Doubts, to the Fringe.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

So far my career has allowed me to meet some of my comedy idols (a big one being Eddie Griffin!), travel all round the world (including Melbourne International Comedy Festival) and potentially - and most importantly - be able to pay my mother for rent and petrol. I finally understand what Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas meant by the 'Glamorous Life.'

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

0My show is about doubts and fears - whether they be rational or irrational, personal, social or global. What keeps us awake ... work, family, zombies ... but with laughter!

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Because the idea of sitting in an open plan office, being shouted at by a pedagogue boss with a chip on their shoulder and a toupee on their head feels infinitely more stressful. I could be stressed doing something I hated basically.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

To be funny as fudge with a show that makes people's life more bearable. Also I'm going to hit the gym and have a well-ventilated room too.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I don't think about money, for both artistic and tax reasons. I'd rather have a great show than a profitable one. People pay for experiences; not things, and I'd prefer the memories to last longer than the tangible.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Probably my first show. Having a room full of people coming to watch you is still some of the most humbling sh*t I've experienced. I'll never stop being in awe of that. Thankful to ya'll!

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

I'm looking forward to seeing the debuts of Tez Ilyas, Sarah Callaghan, Fern Brady, Steve Bugeja and Johnny Pelham, the returning shows of Gein's Family Giftshop, Alex Edelman, Michael Che, Trevor Noah and Lazy Susan. As well as Katherine Ryan, Felicity Ward, Daphne, Lucie Pohl, Dana Alexander, Tom Stade, Nish Kumar etc etc. This is all fantasy as neuroses about my own show will probably prevent me from fulfilling this plan.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, 80s Eddie Murphy, Russell Brand, Katherine Ryan, Bernie Mac, Patrice O'Neal, Joan Rivers, Frankie Boyle, Jenny Eclair, French & Saunders. I would have Bill Hicks as the compere; in case reviewers wanted to get cute ;-)

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

My ego and insecurity personified, that guy is hard work!

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Because I plan to have this show cement me as one of the best and most successful comics of my generation ... before I start endorsing energy drinks and airlines ... so people will know that before it all happens, I had some integrity before I'm cursing while eating kangaroo balls for stars.

'Dane Baptiste: Reasonable Doubts' is at 7:15pm at Pleasance Courtyard on 5-16, 18-30 August. Listing
