Edinburgh Q and A

Clown Funeral answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Clown Funeral

Comedy sextet Clown Funeral - comprised of Patrick Tobin, Freddie Paul, Christina Owen, Rachel Elfassy Bitoun, Sam Thorogood and Ella Tebay - talk about their first ever Festival Fringe together.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

We're pretty new on the block. We met at Warwick University two years ago and have been creating darkly comic work since then, but Mr Poe's Legendarium is our first outing as Clown Funeral. But I'd say we're happy with where we are: definitely excited as to where we might end up.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Edgar Allan Poe (with a helping hand from Sigmund Freud) presents a dark array of horrific tales involving wigs, chain letters and séances.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

The Fringe gives us the opportunity to share our work with loads of like-minded people, which is really, really exciting. We can't wait to see what people think.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Our programme image will be popping up throughout Edinburgh on posters, flyers, stickers, t-shirts, social media (Facebook & Twitter) and...well, the programme. So look out for a sad-looking, red-nosed Edgar Allan this Fringe.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

We're hoping to make money back to put into the Clown Funeral pot for future shows, but as always with the Fringe, who knows?

6. What are you most looking forward to about your first Edinburgh Festival?

Spending the month as a company: performing, eating, flyering and drinking together.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

We're really excited for Rhum and Clay's 64 Squares, Helen Duff's two shows and Bryony Kimmings's Fake It 'til You Make It: we've been lucky enough to do workshops with those three and look forward to seeing them in performance. We'll also be supporting all the amazing work from ex-Warwickers: Souvenirs, The Beanfield, Witch, Some People Talk About Violence, Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons, The Improv Musical, Electric Dreams and Current Location.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

ALL OF MONTY PYTHON. ALL THE TIME.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Anyone genuinely famous because we'd probably be incredibly starstruck and almost certainly embarrass ourselves.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Edgar Allan Poe and Sigmund Freud. What's not to like?

'Mr Poe's Legendarium' is at 5:15pm at C Nova on 5-22 August. Listing
