Edinburgh Q and A

Charlotte McDougall answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Gay Furnish. Charlotte McDougall

Charlotte McDougall is at the Fringe to play Gay Furnish, a 'flirt coach'.

Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

It all began in 1975 - Innkeeper, Notre Dame Primary School. Oh, nativity play doesn't count? Then 1999 when I started out writing for Smack The Pony. I then came to Edinburgh the following year as half of McDougall and Donkin, then we joined forces with Fay Rusling and Oriane Messina (writers of Green Wing) for four series of The Bearded Ladies on BBC Radio 4. Gay Furnish: Flirt Coach is my debut solo show, or maiden voyage.

As Gay would say: "You have a choice in life, you can choose to be a happy bunny, or you can choose to be a miserable shit". I'm happy, thanks for asking. Without the bunny bit.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

SEX: SEXY SQUIRTING, SEXY NIPPLES, SEXY RABBITS, SEXY COSSACK DANCING, SEXY KNICKERS, SEXY ROADKILL, SEXY SONGS, SEXY OAPs, SEXY UKULELE. OH, AND RAISINS.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Stress is pain leaving the body.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

The smell of my pheromones will draw them in. They won't be able to stay away. Also, word of mouth. Gay's tips are rock solid. For example, "Worried about your partner thinking about someone else during sex? Shout out your own name every five seconds."

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

So long as I've got enough to keep me in ASDA meat-free burgers, I'm happy.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

A dog in a handbag in the front row which kept growling. Gay encourages all her followers to bring their growlers.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

Nina Conti - but we clash so she'll have to change her time.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

The dream line up would be Peter Sellers, Margo from The Good Life and Dame Edna.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

I know who Gay Furnish wouldn't want to bump into - Les from Stevenage. He's been stalking her since her last show.

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Because it will change their lives for the better.

'Gay Furnish Flirt Coach' is at 9pm at Underbelly, Cowgate on 6-16, 18-23, 25-30 August. Listing
