2014 Edinburgh Fringe
Stephanie Laing: Nincompoop
Lovable little weirdo Stephanie Laing realises that she is a very silly young woman. Her show will include odd noises, several drawings of ducks, a confession about some vomit, and a song about a newt. We're not saving the world here, people. We're just trying to get by without making too much of a mess on the carpet. 'A great stand-up. Always works magic' (Phil Kay). 'Disgusting and delightful in equal measure' (ThreeWeeks).

As you walk down the royal mile during the Edinburgh fringe festival you are inundated with half a forest worth of flyers. Reading the blurbs on the back of these flyers does, at times, become tedious. So, when I was handed a flyer for Stephanie Laing's 'Nincompoop' I was pleasantly surprised. The monotony of the typical '5 star comedy' review was broken by an honest, funny, 'does what it says on the tin advertisement' which summed the show up perfectly. So with an sense of excitement I ventured to the Globe Bar grabbed a beer and pulled up a pew. The show was brilliant. There was a superb mix of comedy and Stephanie engaged the audience throughout the 50 minuet set which, because the room was small, felt intimate and personal. I laughed the whole way through and my 'laugh of the festival' was a section in her song about a fox killing a pirate, sang to a popular Christmas classic, which had me in tears... It is that kind of show! I would 100% recommend this show. For a free, late night stand up comedy set, you couldn't ask for more. Also the venue does very cheap beer, so really, it would be rude not to go!
I went to this show on the recommendation of a friend that saw a preview in Brighton and I have to say I am glad I went on that 1st saturday night of Free Fringe 2014 !
Stephanie is funny, that's always useful in an hour show, she is also clever, vulnerable, a bit of a loony, shocking at times, way over the line at times too but I loved it.
If there was any reason not to give her a 5 its just that she still has a lot to learn about engaging the audience, some of the material made her lose a bit of confidence, she is clearly far from the finished article BUT I am nit picking, the hour went very quickly, I belly laughed at times and giggled throughout and left with a smile on my face.
Definately worth a butchers whilst you can see her for free.
