Luke McQueen tricks an audience into watching him

Luke McQueen has been making a name for himself by entering into excruciating situations. Live At The Electric viewers will remember him trying to win his girlfriend back via some embarrassing stunts, and you might have seen that video in which he turns off the pub's TV during a World Cup match. His actions at the festival this year look set to continue this self-flagellation.
Now That's What I Luke McQueen has been heralded as "Johnny Vegas as his self-loathing best, but with that bitter energy focussed into smart, original and fiercely angry set pieces", but as far as McQueen is concerned not enough people are coming to see his show still. As a result, he undertook an audacious stunt the other day to rectify things.
He explained to us: "I'm a big fan of Stewart Lee and he says that every comedian needs to find their audience. So that's what I'm trying to do, but it's really hard when there's no audience in front of you.
"I decided that if I can't get an audience then I would pretend I was someone that does. I booked out the King Dome and got all the tickets printed and told everyone I met that Frankie Boyle was doing a special one-off show. Everyone seemed really excited.
"It was 11:20pm and the room was packed. It was a complete sell out. I wasn't worried that they were all there to see Frankie as I was confident that once they heard my comedy they would be grateful.
"A man that worked at the venue greeted the audience with a microphone saying 'Give me a cheer if you're excited about seeing Frankie Boyle' - the crowd went crazy. It was really exciting. He then welcomed 'Frankie' to the stage...
"I waited for the applause to die down a little and then walked out, holding a bucket full of props. They seemed a bit confused so I explained that I lied to them all as I really wanted to finally perform to an audience. They seemed a bit annoyed but I thought that once I did some material they would love me... to my surprise they didn't. In fact my material seemed to make them more annoyed.
"Eventually they all started to walk out. Some people said some pretty mean things as they left and one man even kicked my bucket over. I tried to win them back by reading a short play I wrote but, to be honest, I was a little annoyed as they weren't even listening and were being quite rude."
Ouch. Although, as a consolation, this sounds very much like a contender for this year's Malcolm Hardee Cunning Stunt Award. Weirdly, this bad reaction hasn't put Luke off trying something similar again though...
"It was a bit demotivating in the end but it hasn't put me off from trying it again. I might book out a bigger venue and tell everyone that it's a Morrissey gig. I think his audience won't mind as much as he never turns up anyway."
Given that statement, Luke may actually turn up to be the headliner in any show you buy tickets for, but if you definitely want to see him head to 'Now That's What I Luke McQueen'. 8pm at the Pleasance Courtyard until the 24th August. Listing
Whether or not you're in Edinburgh, you can get Luke via your iPhone/iPad. Download Luke's Alarm for free and he will perform for you each time the alarm goes off. Luke adds: "Hopefully that can help me find my audience online."
22nd August update: Here's the video. It's painful to watch!
