Comedians beat critics in annual Edinburgh Fringe football match

Comedian team at the Amnesty International Edinburgh Fringe football match 2013

The annual match in which a team of comedians take on a team of critics in a game of football took place on the Meadows in Edinburgh yesterday.

Described as "such a grudge match they had to get Amnesty International to referee", the final score this year was 3-1 to the comedians.

The journalists were up against it from the very beginning, with Jimeoin scoring an 'outrageous' lob from miles out in the opening minute. The clowns scored again midway through the first half, with a nicely-taken low shot from Plebs star Tom Rosenthal finding the net.

After the half-time break (featuring musical entertainment from The Drum Struck Show), the critics gained one back via a penalty (taken by Fest Magazine's Edd McCracken). However, the comedians then ensured their victory was sealed with another beautiful goal from Jimeoin.

Aside from goal machine Jimeoin, those watching generally agreed Rosenthal was the star man on the pitch... perhaps not a surprise considering his father is one Jim Rosenthal.

Other members of the comedian team included Daniel Sloss, Keith Farnan and Milton Jones.

Some might say the critics were in a disadvantageous position before the game even started, having been given a black kit to apparently indicate the 'evil' nature of their profession, and the sideline commentary from Iain Stirling and Eric Lampaert perhaps not entirely impartial.

After the match Lampaert, who captained the comedians team, commented on Twitter "Very Proud Of My Boys! Comedians win! 3-1" and posted the picture seen here of the winning team celebrating.

The critics have vowed to try and forget the result when having to review these comedians across the rest of this festival, and to return next year fitter and better organised to try and beat their record 7-3 victory in 2011.
