Beijing Cake
Beijing Cake tells the story of Americans lost in China, international heartbreak, and an unpalatable slice of cake. Things quickly unravel when Lori, an American diplomat, moves to Beijing despite her inability to speak Chinese and her impending due date. Lori finds a mentor in the spirit of Mao Zedong, who looks blue from his formaldehyde bath and eagerly preaches anti-Western philosophy. Mistranslations and misunderstandings ensue, most egregiously when Lori misnames her own son. In this delightfully absurd comedy by New York Times bestselling author Rachel Kauder Nalebuff, assimilation proves to be no piece of cake.
