Badly named things with Catie Wilkins
This year Three Weeks favourite Catie Joy Wilkins has a show all about the many things in the world that just fail to live up to the names they've been given. Starting with her own middle name. To get you in the mood, she sets out her manifesto for more accurate naming here in Three Weeks.
Catie Wilkins, ThreeWeeks, 21st August 2012Will joy help me get through the end of the Fringe?
We are over half way through the Fringe. It's the weird but fun tipping point where we're nearly on the home straight but not quite sick of everything yet. There are clues we are half way through this glorious test of endurance. Firstly the comedians are starting to look a bit tired. Secondly, when you speak to them, they say 'I am a bit tired.'

Did the name your parents chose for you reflect their unrealistic expectations? Hope? Faith? Moon Unit? Catie Joy Wilkins hates smiling. Her middle name makes things worse.
Not everyone has the unique combination of misery and sarcasm to benefit from the full irony of having Joy as a middle name. (Some people actually look on the bright side of life).
Following her highly successful Edinburgh debut A Chip off The Odd Block last year, Catie returns to Underbelly with Joy is My Middle Name; a brand new hour of hilarious stories and dry wit.
Find out what to do if your tooth snags during fellatio, how men created a feminist Swiss Army Knife (basically by adding a sewing kit) plus hear some good news for thousands of girls with no sex appeal.
During the hour some of the things Catie will be talking about include:
- Inappropriately named things in general. There are some Spanish nappies called 'Pedo' nappies. She has a picture.
- Sense of identity in general, why some people choose to draw attention to certain facets of their personalities; 'I'm mad!', 'I'm happily married'. Also people who give themselves their own nicknames. Catie is suspicious of them.
- 'Your mama' jokes through the ages, e.g. (for olden days) 'your mama is so slatternly she got hit by a parked stage coach'.
Catie's darkly sarcastic delivery and self-effacing humour has established her as a unique up-and-coming comic, not to be missed. Catie was listed in Dave's 'Top 10 stand-ups to catch in 2011' and also appeared on FHM's Stand Up Hero (ITV4).
Catie is a prolific comic writer and has written for BBC1 Children's sitcom Hotel Trubble, Sex Bombs (BBC NI), The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and contributed to The Atheist's Guide To Christmas. Her first children's book My Best Friend And Other Enemies will be published by Nosy Crow in September 2012.
