2011 Edinburgh Fringe
Waterloo
After he had killed off Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created two charming veterans of the Battle of Waterloo: a garrulous cockney Corporal and dashing conceited French brigadier Gerard. Both characters, played with great style by Richard Smithies, recall their thrilling adventures in this delightful comic show. Brigadier Gerard - the self-confessed bravest soldier and greatest lover - featured in over twenty stories that were as popular as those of Sherlock Holmes. The Corporal was conceived as a comic tour-de-force for Sir Henry Irving who, after its initial triumph, played him for the rest of his life.
