Sheffield's Matt Skinny and Stan Skinny have landed an exclusive run at this year's Edinburgh Free Fringe. Playing the internationally renowned comedy festival for the first time, the comedy twin brother duo have been granted the opportunity of performing their Hairy Feet show at the Kiwi bar at 10pm every night from 6th August to 27th August. The comedy duo will also be keeping a Video Diary and uploading regular content from the Edinburgh experience.
The Hairy Feet Show is just one of the shows put on by Matt and Stan, performed under the banner of the Skinny Theatre. They trained in street circus with Sheffield's Greentop Circus and have appeared in several of the Circus' variety shows and gone on to perform at various Sheffield events including Millhouses Park Festival, Peace in the Park, Bootleggers and Baptists (Lantern Theatre) and the Sheffield Sizzler.
Performing regularly over the last three years around the city, Sheffield's premier twin variety act perform a range of turns, from the french faux pas clowns, The Condiments; to the music hall inspired, new age minstrel show it's ok to like, Bunty and Bodkins; through to the world's greatest conceptual rock band, The Skinnies.
Matt and Stan were born and raised in Lichfield. Stan came to Sheffield to study English at Hallam University in 2005, while Matt studied drama at Aberystwyth. Matt joined Stan in Sheffield when they completed their degrees in 2008. Since then, from their base in Pitsmoor, the pair have been building their reputations as variety performers in and around South Yorkshire over the past 3 years.
At 6ft 5 they're already big, but it's a very bold step for the brothers, as Edinburgh will be their first time away from the comfort blanket of their uncle Monty and their bedrooms.
"We've had continual hibernation since the age of 4," said the brothers, speaking as one. "We only know of the world through television after trying to prove granddad wrong that TV wouldn't make your eyes go square. Now twenty years on, all we know about the world is from what the TV told us; for many years we thought the world existed only in medium definition 2D. We ate TV dinners and even cleaned ourselves with soap operas. Now, we are crawling out from under our rocks, onto the stage, in the hope that someone will discover and exploit us for money."
The pair have since gone onto earn their stripes in some of the toughest working man's clubs in Sheffield in nothing but wigs and makeup. This experience has hard wired them to be confident to take their surreal, eccentric, character based comedy show, Hairy Feet, to the dazzling streets of Edinburgh.
Hairy Feet is an hour of character based comedy and musical madness that is performed solely by the brothers and was inspired by their hours of watching television. Combining an hour of sketches based on American sci-fi, cop dramas, Eurovision song contests, period dramas, a host of reality shows, you name it, it's all there providing something for everyone to enjoy: it's a show for people who don't go to shows, so just sit back put your hairy feet up and pretend you're watching television at the theatre.
The show promises to be a treat for comedy fans and psychologists alike who have pestered the boys for twin studies from an early age.
"We were always being asked questions like, 'do you feel each other's pain?' 'What's it like being a twin?' 'Do you know what each other is thinking?' So we thought we would just show people a picture of what it's like in order that maybe they can go out and find their own twins and stop pointing at us in the supermarket."
On working solely with his brother Stan remarked: "I couldn't be happier, I think working with your twin is the best feeling in the world, I mean we would probably like to work with other people at some point, but at the moment I'm happy because Matt has always supported me and even from an early age he's always helped me get out of tight spots."
