Chris Cox review

Chris Cox

Chris Cox has really pulled out all of the stops with his latest show. Incorporating the audience, Cox engages them in impressive feats of mind reading. The audience rightfully and repeatedly gasp at the incredible stunts performed. It's certainly impressive and Cox has worked hard to create a complete and well-rounded show.

Cox's Fatal Distraction does strikingly resemble a Derren Brown show in more than a few places: firstly through some of the effects, but more obviously through the construct of the show, specifically the climax. Cox also prowls the stage Derren Brown-esque, though he noticeably lacks the sheer in-your-face charisma to pull it off. At times like these, he should perhaps be a little more embracing of the 'nerdy' personality he portrays. However, he does a commendable job of adding his own humanity to the show as well, incorporating a love story which is genuinely touching.

Whilst it was quite a spectacle, the show wasn't particularly funny - and that's what we here at The British Comedy Guide are most interested in. Although there were humourous moments, this isn't really what I would call a comedy show. So for a night of impressive entertainment this is a great, but I'm just not sure if it should have been put in the comedy section of the Fringe programme.
