Mothers and daughters have never been like this. Sex, drugs and Norwegian Americans. A comic journey with song, progressive politics, and even a chase scene! Men love it too. Making its European debut at this year's Edinburgh Festival the theatre production Now That She's Gone comes to the Assembly Rooms' Baillie Room for the whole month of August.
Written and performed by columnist and author of Beauty Bites Beast, Ellen Snortland - Now That She's Gone is a play that explores her often hilarious, irreverent and sometimes torturous relationship with her Norwegian-American mother. This one woman show has been described as a Lily Tomlin / Garrison Keillor hybrid... passionate, poignant and funny in turns. A memoir piece with Eleanor Roosevelt, the play and performance has received rave reviews and standing ovations in California, New York, and Washington, D.C.Nominated for a 2009 Pulitzer Prize in Drama
This is the kind of one woman show that people who hate one woman shows love. Juxtapose a sexually liberated and wild daughter thoroughly enjoying life, with a stoic Norwegian-American domesticated mother who sounds like she just got off the boat. Full of humour and poignancy, as well as human rights and history, the show has been performed across the country and around the world. Everywhere the show has been performed, audiences have connected with Ellen. There's the comedy of their intertwined lives, their final touching moments together and Ellen's uncovering the secret of her mother's mysterious behaviour. This story is universal in its appeal, and reaches across age, gender, race, religion, political affiliation and sexual orientation to bring something identifiable to all who see it: how we relate to the most important relationship in our lives... our parents.
