Deborah Frances-White interview
From flirting at the Fringe to making a movie... it's all go for Deborah Frances-White this summer. Here, she tells Lucy Wood more about her show for the 2011 festival, tantalisingly called How To Get Almost Anyone To Want To Sleep With You.
Intriguing title, Deborah! Tell us all about it...
It's a show about feeling sexy - which is a 24/7 issue for most people - no matter their age or relationship status.
I had an epiphany a few Edinburgh Fringes ago about what makes people fanciable. I had never felt very sexy up until that experience, so I was compelled to write the show.
I had to do a serious amount of flirting for research.
Self-help and comedy is an interesting mix - what do you hope your audience will take away with them?
A wink, a smile and a whole lot of strut.
Do you delight in your cheeky reputation?
Yes, a bit. I feel at my sexiest when I don't censor myself.
If we're having a bad day, what should we tell ourselves?
"I'm a Scorsese movie in a hat." (You might have to come to my show to understand why - but once you get it, it really works).
With all this good advice, you can't be single. Tell us about how you met your partner.
Doing comedy improv. He had to communicate to me I was an Eskimo without speaking, so he rubbed noses with me. It was sweet and romantic.
If you had to sell your show to a stranger in the Royal Mile, how would you plug it?
It's stand-up comedy which leaves you feeling sexier. And I'm in it.
So what do you like best about the Fringe?
The crazy amount of talent, ideas and stories that pour out of every corner of this beautiful city. I will you be going to see the supremely talented Hannah Gadsby's Mary Contrary art history show, the gorgeous Shirley and Shirley, the ever-enchanting Storytellers' Club, and the hilarious Sadia Azmat's Please Hold, You're Being Transferred to a UK-Based Asian Representative.
What's happening for you after Scotland?
Hopefully I'm going to make a movie. I sold the first screenplay I co-wrote to Fox Searchlight - it's still in development which means I have a lot of fairly implausible Hollywood stories to tell. Then I wrote a screwball comedy about a one night stand gone wrong called Say My Name. It has an amazing director attached and is on the cusp of being realised - watch this space and touch a lot of wood.
'Deborah Frances-White: How To Get Almost Anyone To Sleep With You' is on until 27th August at 10:30 at the Assembly Hall. Listing
