Barry and Stuart interview
Lucy Wood chats to magical comedy duo Barry & Stuart...
If you've ever wondered how to saw a woman in half, talk to spirits or pluck a coin from your best mate's ear, Google it. If your taste in magic is more like plunging a needle into your eye socket or chewing razor blades, then you're in the right place...
Like Derren Brown's mischievous younger brothers, the Bafta-nominated Barry and Stuart return to Edinburgh this year with not one, but two shows. And this time, the Scottish sons of Satan promise to let us in on their secrets!
Their offering for this year's Fringe is Show and, secondly, Tell, which is... precisely what it says it is. See the magic in the Show and find out how it's done in the Tell.
The pair - fresh from their appearance on primetime BBC1 series The Magicians - have been touring in the run-up to the festival with a mix of old and new stuff, but all characteristically gruesome and bloody.
Since debuting at the Fringe with Part Time Warlocks in 2008, they have gained a devoted following, more five star reviews than you can shake a magic wand at and sell-out gigs. Not to mention that they were awarded Best Comedy Illusionists at the World Magic Awards, and were flown to LA to perform in a one-off show seen by 12 million viewers on US television.
Barry (Jones, if you're wondering) said: "People see us stabbing ourselves - and sometimes we actually are. We're fairly lucky we haven't been injured. We enjoy live shows because we don't have to stick to a script, so something that would have been taken out of TV programme is seen by the audience."
Having appeared on The Magicians, they are known by an increasingly wider audience. One of the best moments of the programme for the pair was meeting Ade Edmondson, who they both watched when they were younger. Now, their focus is perfecting their Fringe show...
Stuart (MacLeod, if you want to know) said: "The performance is split into two parts; the second at midnight, including the secrets to the tricks carried out in the first show. There is a certain enjoyment to keeping things a secret and sometimes it's better not to know how things are done. But for those who want to know, we will definitely be telling."
"Splitting the performance gives people the option to have the tricks remain a mystery. "Some people are disappointed when they find out how they are done and can't believe they were fooled, whereas others are amazed. We have one foot in theatre and one foot in comedy," he added. "We are often looking for texture to a show."
The future beyond Edinburgh is unplanned, but Barry and Stuart would like to take their magic abroad, particularly back to America. In the meantime, they have good old Edinburgh - and its good old weather - to look forward to.
If you would rather remain mystified and not know how the magic works, you are more than welcome to enjoy the Show. But only audiences who have been to the first can get tickets for the second big reveal. And in case you're wondering if the entire Magic Circle will come after them with burning torches and sharpened pitchforks for revealing how it's done, don't worry. Barry and Stuart are planning to climb into a cabinet and simply... disappear!
Show and Tell are on from August 3-28th August at Udderbelly's Pasture. Full listing
