Andrew Bird's Early Bird

Andrew Bird throwing a welly boot. Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird cancelled his show yesterday in order to rush home to meet the latest edition to the Bird family...

The stand-up comedian's wife, Katka, went into labour much earlier than anticipated and following a speedy labour, Zachary Adam Bird arrived weighing in at 7lbs, 10 oz.

There's no rest for Bird though, as 'the show must go on' mantra applies to all Edinburgh comics. The shell-shocked new dad is already back at The Gilded Balloon to continue with his daily stand-up show, Andrew Bird's Village Fete.

Over the weekend and before all the baby drama, Bird held a Welly Wanging (boot throwing) competition on the Meadows. Braving the wind, rain and intermittent sunshine enthusiastic welly wangers came down to give the village fete inspired competition a go.

Hannah pipped Lauren in the ladies section and William, aged 13, took the under 14 crown. Milo McCabe managed the third furthest throw overall, and Jason Trotman sent the boot the second furthest. However, it's Benj Evans who no doubt is walking around this week with the smuggest smile, after he was crowned the entrant with the 'longest wang'.
