Musical comedian Ashley Frieze returns to the Fringe with his hit show that claims you only know seven songs. Since last year, the show has been at various UK comedy festivals, including Manchester, Nottingham and the Brighton Fringe. A veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe, Ashley has been performing as a musical stand-up comedian for the last nine years. "It's strange to think that, if my theory is right, all my work boils down to just seven ideas," says Ashley. "When you sit down to work out what songs are about, you realise that all songwriters have the same motivations and feelings".
Ashley's Seven Deadly Sings theory has been impressing audiences across the UK and was turned into a feature in a national Sunday newspaper at the end of the show's run last year. "It was great fun to convert such a musical show into the written word," said Ashley, "it proved that there's more to my act than just making noises."
When it comes to singing, though, audiences can expect a treat. An accomplished singer, Ashley plays guitar for most of his live work and even brings his piano along for this show, playing in a variety of styles from Classical to Pop. If you ever wondered why Beethoven didn't write love songs, or how Percy Sledge might have been less romantic if he'd read Nietzsche, you'll walk away from this musical extravaganza extremely satisfied.
With a few guest celebrity song appearances, a spontaneous audience-created love-song, and excerpts from Elton John's failed stand-up career, this show promises something for everyone.
The show is "remastered" for 2011 with new illustrations, sillier jokes and even more proof that your record collection is smaller than you think.
The Seven Deadly Sings is on at Espionage at 2.30pm daily 13th - 28th August and is Free entry as part of the Laughing Horse Free Festival.
