Founded in 2003 by Ian Fox as an independent stand-up showcase, The Great Big Comedy Picnic has become a Fringe institution. Returning for its eighth year, it promises even more of its trademark late-afternoon smorgasbord of amusement.
This year's line up includes Ian Fox, Ashley Frieze, and conspiracy theorist Rod Shepherd.
Regularly described as a misfit, a slacker, and an idiot, Ian Fox never held down a proper job until he became a comedian at some point in the 21st century official records are unclear about. His previous history of random and unrelated jobs included worker in a mustard factory, English teacher in Ecuador, mystery shopper, film extra, computer monkey, poster designer, professional gambler and photographer. He's also pulled his fair share of pints.
During his time in comedy Ian has written and performed critically acclaimed fringe shows including "The Butterfly Effect" later turned into a BBC radio pilot and "One Man Defective Story". He's a highly sought after compere and has supported a number of higher profile comedians at theatre shows up and down the country.
Musical comedian, Ashley Frieze, is a high-energy guitar toting buffoon. His enthusiastic brand of merriment can warm even the coolest of audiences, and he has made appearances at pretty much every type of venue, from comedy club, to rock festival and even on moving buses. Ashley is also appearing in his debut solo show this year, "The Seven Deadly Sings".
Rod Shepherd says: "Hi I'm Rod Shepherd, conspiracy theorist, breaking down the barriers and opening your eyes to the truth. Are you awake? I'm your conspiracy alarm clock, what's the time? 9:11 WAKE UP!!! I've had my own cult for a bit but the local council closed me down, why? Because I'm too controversial plus it was a conspiracy, look at your eyes, lies."
With such a range of comedians, the Picnic promises a mouthful of fun for everyone.
