Tom Wrigglesworth review
With his astonishing mop of hair, Wrigglesworth takes to the stage after his intro video, with an air of glee and genuine delight to be there. Seemingly ever chipper to be recounting the tales of his Nightmare Dream Wedding to us, he has amiability from the off.
He is quick to relate that he knows about the spelling mistake in his intro, and that his editor misconstrued 'make it bigger' with 'spell it wrong', but he touches on this only briefly, before giggling and moving on. The show focuses exactly on its title, and tells the audience of the time leading up to, and the day of Wrigglesworth's wedding. Unlike other shows with a titular objective, however, it is not just presented to us in a 'then I did this and she did that and it all turned out like this' style...
The show is built around seemingly unrelated episodes before the wedding, including an excellent section on the Jeremy Kyle Show - if you thought you'd seen this done to death, have a look at this take on it, and I guarentee you will laugh, not even necessarily at Kyle. There are some very sweet and personal tales here, and although they may not all ring entirely true, they are told in such a charming way, you hope and believe they are.
It's a show that's worth seeing, for the opportunity to see someone so entirely comfortable in front of an audience regale some incredibly personal tales in a comedic manner. And, thankfully, a Northern comedian who doesn't play on being Northern.
