British Comedy Guide, 1st August 2010More details
Award-winning musical comedian James Sherwood returns to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a brand new show for 2010 as part of the Five Pound Fringe, enlisting the services of a piano and a show that will comprise of songs, stand-up routines and shameless attempts to find a buyer for his piano.
The piano will be auctioned on eBay for the duration of the Fringe and will have a range of famous signatures by the time the winning bidder takes it away after the final show. If the piano sells for more than James spent on it, the profit will go to a charity of the buyer's choice, offering audiences the chance to take home the ultimate souvenir, support charity and enjoy a musical comedy feast - all in the same hour.
James possesses 'non-stop invention and brilliant comic craft', mixing 'dry, gently cerebral comedy with moments of inspired silliness' (The Guardian) which is 'gloriously pedantic and quite brilliant' (The Scotsman) and using songs that address topical issues with 'savage satire' (Sunday Times).
Having left a career in public relations (he helped launch Blackberry product campaigns in the UK), James embarked on a career in comedy writer, contributing to shows on BBC Radio 1, 2, 4 and 7 such as The News Quiz and The Now Show, which was nominated for Best Comedy in the Sony Awards 2009. During the 2010 general election campaign, he performed on BBC Radio 4's Vote Now Show, and he has also frequently appeared on Sky News' paper review and on BBC Radio 5 Live's Richard Bacon Show.
James has performed a solo show at every Edinburgh Fringe since his 2006 debut sell-out I Know What You Did Last Sunday. His 2008 show Songs of Music was recorded live and released on CD later in the same year. His 2009 show At the Piano toured the UK in early 2010, and will be available on CD at the forthcoming Fringe.
