Picnicface

Just discovered this rather fine Canadian sketch troupe:

If you like, check out their other work. There's a few gems. Any Canadians read the board? Are Picnicface well established over there?

We're big fans of Picnic Face. They have some great sketches. Well worth checking out. POWERTHIRST!!!!

Yea they have some great stuff. I wish someone would give them thier own show.
Although they continue to win several Canadian Comedy awards that seems to be the extent of their success. Well except Andrew Bush that guy's been on Canadian TV since I was a kid. He writes for some of Canada's most popular television shows like Robson Arms, Canadian Idol and This Hour has 22 Minutes.
So yea they do well on tour but have yet to bring their comedy to TV.

Blimey - Canadian TV must be a tough nut to crack. Be very surprised if a sketch group of that quality didn't get some TV time over here.

From what Curt's said previously, 90+% of entertainment programmes on Canadian TV are from south of the border, so it's an inherently tough nut owing to the extremely limited programming available.

Yup and it's only getting worse. The CBC has just broken it's own code and allowed 7 hours of non Canadian content to be played every day (that's pretty well all US tv). Thanks Conservatives for gutting the little Canadian culture we have left.

And that's just CBC.

I wonder what the price differential is between a licence to import the cheapest US comedy import currently 'airing' relative to an originally produced show. Seems to me picnicface could knock out a fantastic production for a very low budget. They're just naturally very funny. No props required. And the chance of it being a flop is limited due to their established fan base. So come on CBC ! Time to make them the new kids in the hall.

Curt - also just 'discovered' Nathan Fielder. Brilliant. Thumbs up for Canadian comedy.

haha I loved him on This Hour has 22 Minutes but I have this itching feeling this interview with the head of CBC is why he is no longer on the show. Laughing out loud

As for the price of US shows they are actually much cheaper for a Canadian broadcaster to purchase (and they bring in almost guaranteed revenue) as apposed to paying money to actually create Canadian content. That's because of our rules that won't allow American broadcasters to set up shop in Canada and there only other alternative is to sell a bunch of US shows as cheap package to a Canadian Broadcaster.
The only time Canadian Broadcasters put money or give chances to Canadian tv is when they are forced to by CRTC standards.
And that right there is the reason you see SOOOOO many Canadian comedians south of the boarder. We don't have a proper system set up like you guys. :(
But I do agree with you, they could easily bring in a crowd. So could a lot of Canadian talent. Unfortunately no ones willing to take the chance.
