I decided against it. Too heavy.

Most of them thar 'copper' coins are steel with a very thin copper coating.

Try a magnet on modern UK copper coins and be amazed.

The engine in my Lotus Elan, with its brand new cylinder head started up and ran for the first time today.

:D Way to go Bill. Did you work on the engine yourself?

I don't know, Billwill. Unlike Stott I'm pretty hard to amaze.

I had the bits (valves, springs, cam followers, camshafts etc) assembled into the new cylinder head by an expert engine man, but I have fitted the head to the engine myself.

The link above, below the pic of the robot girl, gives all the details, trials & tribulations.

You are a very handy man Bill. I wish you lived next door to me so I could abuse your skills on a weekly basis, rewarding you with an occasional shop bought cake or something.

I should also mention that this Lotus car has owned me since 1969 that's 43 years (longer than most of you have yet lived) and I've done this action of refitting the top of the engine many times.

The Clay-Test topic on Lotus Elan.Net shows with pictures how I did it. http://www.lotuselan.net/forums/elan-f15/clay-test-checking-clearance-between-valves-pistons-t26441.html

This occasion I had to fit the head 3 times, once for the clay test, then the second time I forgot to put the exhaust pipes in place first, so I had to take the head off again to wriggle the exhaust pipes into place, before putting the head on for the third time. I'm really glad I was using that hoist pully arrangement or my arms would have fallen off by now. That head weighs about 19Kg.

Cool

Did you buy it brand new? Has it been your only mode of transport since or is it more a Sunday afternoon bit of fun?

My Lotus was just over a year old when I bought it. She has been my sole transport a lot of the time, I've driven it about 200,000 miles. Lovey <3

However at various times I've had a second car, mainly because my main hobby/sport was sub-aqua diving and it was more convenient to have a bigger car for carrying all the diving equipment, often for a whole diving club..

Other vehicles included:
A Morris 30 Cwt ex post-offce van (which we drove to the South of France and later all the way to San Miguel in the Azores, via a ferry from Lisbon ).
A Mini-Clubman
A Reliant Scimitar GTE (great for towing inflated Diving 'speed-boats' on a trailer)
A VW Caravanette
An old battered Fiesta XRi

Currently I also have a Renault Grande Espace (7-seater MPV), which I call my Tardis, because it seems larger on the inside than the outside.

I'm now going to have another stab at watching The Thick of It. I watched a few episodes of series 1 a few years back and liked it, but didn't quite see what all the fuss was about. Going to give the opening to series 4 a quick stab.

Chip's off to look for a new printer at Tesco.
