Is it a Windows machine? You can download a non-installing version of VLC that should play DVDs (and just about every other type of video/audio file) here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
You should be able to just unzip it to a thumb drive and run it from there without actually installing any software on your machine.
