Well, they're little canvas-y things, and you put a foot inside each one. Then you tie up the laces, or fasten the buckles, or perhaps in your case, I expect, pull the velcro tight over itself. 
They have laces, and are Converse. What is confusing is that I have been wearing different pairs of them for years, and got more yesterday in the same size as usual, but the left one feels huuuuge.

No! I put on a shoe of an old pair on the left and it was fiiiine, and then compared the sole of the old to that of the new.
... I am so confused.
