I am trying to translate Juliet's speech from Act 3 Scene 2 (Gallop apace you fiery footed steeds...) into 'modern' English. I needed an idiom or an idea to replace the references she makes to Phaeton and Phoebus. I have been debating the idea of leaving the references in since it is difficult to draw out the complex meanings in the speech using anything else. However, your suggestion regarding the atom bomb has given me some ideas about somehow writing that into her speech, especially since she makes references to darkness and the night.

It could be done, thankyou ever so much Marc! :D

Cool :)

maybe there is something with George Bush here.

Seems a rather tenuous connection, as George Bush was not a young man and most of his policies had the backing of the House, the Senate and the citizenry. He was reelected and completed both terms, so it wasn't a case of an inexperienced youngster who lost hold of the reins and had to be shot down.

That's the thing with metaphor it's not literal. In this instance it the US that is too young to have control of so much power, embodied in the form of old 'George you won't fool him again shame on you Bush'. And widening through to Mankind himself being too young/ignorant to be given the powers it has through technological advances.

Can anybody think of a modern tale that would resemble the main moral teachings of Phaeton's fall from grace?

Basically, Phaeton was the son of the greek God of the sun, Phoebus. Every night Phoebus would pull the sun across the sky in his firey chariot until it went behind the earth, leading to night. When Phaeton fund out he was the sun of Phoebus he asked Phoebus to prove it by granting him one wish. Phaeton's one wish was to drive the firey chariot, he did this but he couldn't control the horses and the sun went wildly all over the place. Eventually Zeus struck the chariot down with a thunderbolt, killing Phaeton.

So basically, I need a tale which combines a discrepancy in age and wisdom/recklessness. I realise this is a long shot, but I'm at my wit's end trying to think of something. :(

How about the WHOLE HUMAN RACE, busily burning itself into oblivion by Global Warming.

That's really streeeeeeeeeetching it ...

To be honest since the main idea of the speech is about love and the night drawing in I think anything is stretching it!

It's a difficult essay to write, essentially.

Yep, he served 2 terms and was elected '3' times - that's how much they wanted him!

Not really, You might not agree with the thesis but it is hardly a stretch. Like I say the whole myth can refer to mankind as a whole. Bit like icarus bit like any fable. In fact totally like any fable.

:)

How about celebrity culture?

If you only need an Analogue TV, to go with an RF digital set-top box I have a superb 21" CRT TV made by Bang & Olafsen which I am giving away if you want it.

It has good 'provenance' too. It used to belong to Laurence Marks.

Oooo!

Laughing out loud

Considered a stand up routine on how much you hate Macs.

You could call it "How do you like them f**king apples!"

It'd be funny 'cos it's true! :D

I just did a finalish edit to a wedding vid for a fiend on iMovie. Tried to speed up a section of the bridal car arriving and it said it needed to covert the entire. It converted the whole lot and now it looks like flickery shit and seems to be not undoable. So I am going to have to do the whole edit again.

Was there not some kind of project file that you could have reverted to previous save of, or something along those lines?

There should have been but I am still trying to work things out. And it just seems to save itself automatically. Good learning curve I guess, but it seems to have affected the unedited original footage too which is bizare! Maybe I'll restart see if it's a glitch. :(

Robyn is beginning to feel Christmassy. Pleased
