I understand people not liking it, others have said it's a bit dreary, they argue a lot and Terry always looks miserable, but to dismiss it as crap is just silly. The episode plots are some of the neatest and cleverest ever penned and the quality of dialogue is way up there, with the acting superb.
I think it's also the first major example of introducing a series story arc through the eps while still making the episodes complete standalone sitcom narratives, something the writers carried into Porridge. Porridge is rightly the more celebrated show, but I've never viewed them with a huge gulf between them in quality, the latter is slightly more classic than the former, which itself is better than 90% of all others. Not just imo surely?
The one with Terry and Scaith in court for fighting is a classic in anyone's book
