John sits alone. Clock shows 7am. Clock is shown moving to 9am?

Have them losing weight.

I'd try and think of a more original way of doing it. Maybe use egg timers?
Put the scene in context. As Chip says, be original. Or as much as you can be. What happens before and after. Plus what manner of programme is it?
It's that internet forum sitcom I'm working on. Want to depict loneliness of a character who's sitting alone in the forum (a room analogy of forum) from 7am until the next forummer arrives at 9am.
Maybe have him doing something time-consuming to pass the time? I know somebody who shreds paper when he's bored. So leave the office and come back some time later and his desk is covered in little piles of paper.
Show, in very very quick succession, minesweeper games being completed. End with an explosion. Show Windows clock.
Do people still play minesweeper?

The English don't, but I'd imagine the Germans do. As practice for the next time you lot try to take over the world.
Give him some dialogue perhaps. Do it retrospectively in a sequence.
Man arrives. Morning, have I missed anything??
Character, Just gor here myself
MONTAGE: TWO HOURS EARLIER CHARACTER BREEZES INTO EMPTY ROOM.
CHARACTER: FIrst on parade am I, good good, it's the early worm who gets the worm...
ONE MINUTE LATER
CHARACTER: (AGITAED) Come on you can't all be asleep California's online for chrissakes...
Gradually see him dissolve into a complete wreck and back again when the first guy arrives.
As it is me I am picturing Hancock but as it is you I imagine you are picturing the actual character.
Lots of ways of doing it but if you can keep it character specific and illuminating that would be the way to go.
If he's using the internet, why not just show a growing pile of sticky toilet paper?

"THE FLOOR INCREASINGLY RESEMBLES THAT OF A SUCCESFUL TAPAS BAR."
He's not that type of guy!

Every guy is that type of guy.
Have screen caption come up:
CAPTION: "TWO HOURS LATER."
Or like someone said earlier, do that clock thing where it shows one time, then dissolves into a later time.

Don't they show Mark playing minesweeper in an episode of 'peep show'?

That's most commanly used...
