British Comedy Guide

Top 3 Over rated British sitcoms.

It's easy to pick on the colonials, let's taste our own bitter medicine.

n.b. these are "over rated" sitcoms, e.g. rated to highly not inherently bad.

1 'Allo 'Allo!, the same joke repeated ad finitum.
2 Last of the Summer Wine, old people not being funny.
3 Only Fools and Horses, it's just sort of dull and nothing much happens funny or otherwise.
4 Absolutely Fabulous, ran out of steam early on. Being drunk and shouting isn't funny on it's own. (Yeh I know that's 4; so sue me.)

I didn't include 2 Pints because I don't think any one rates it that much.

I can't really think of many UK shows - ones that are really rated that I don't like. Most of the classics are as good as their reputations.

1) Only Fools & Horses
2) The Office
3) Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights

Me flame suit is donned!

Oh well, two right out of three isn't bad!

I'd say Pheonix Nights isn't a sitcom.

The Office hmmm, a tad pretensious.

Fools and Horses, cobblers pure and simple.

I'd say Pheonix Nights isn't a sitcom.

And why not?

1. The Young Ones
2. Allo Allo
3. Are you Being Served?

And why not?

It has a developing plot over the season, with characters who grow. In addition it also has extensive none comedic plot devices.

Makes it a dramedy like Minder.

Agreed, but not sure what it is.

Not sure that is right, but certainly an element of the Emperor's new clothes

You're mad.

Well said. I agree with you. The developing plot thingy. Yes indeed.

But a dramedy? Hmmmm....I just can't take Kay serious enough...He's got a perpetual smirk in his eyes.

Yes, he is quite a bad actor.

Blackadder the Third

I think it's an aquired taste, I liked it. But I think it falls into the Boosh style camp of not funny to everyone. At the same time as being very funny to others.

I was watching some of the old Red Dwarfs, and I feel a bit guilty to say it didn't crack a grin. Something about no female characters, and lots of references that didn't click with the futuristic setting.

BlackAdder showed you could have 20th century ideas, in a diferent setting. With out using 20th century cultural idioms.

Blackadder 3rd! I'm genuinely stunned.

As stunned as a weasel that's been whacked on the head by one of Lord Lexington's weasel-whackers?

Overrated. I didn't say it was total crap. But that was the series where similes took over the script, and I don't believe that to be a good thing.
