UK troops in Afghanistan

Michael Yon is the best combat reporter in the world. His reporting from Iraq was just about the only news I believed 100%. The rest of the media reported from the safety of their offices in many cases. Now he's in Afghanistan and he's currently embedded with UK troops and has a report about the top-secret and successful mission to deliver a 200-ton turbine to a hydroelectric dam in the middle of nowhere. Hundreds of soldiers spent months preparing for the dangerous mission that required moving a 100-vehicle convoy more than a hundred miles through Taliban-controlled territory at a snail's pace. There was intense fighting along the way and more than 200 Taliban were killed, while no coalition troops were lost. Yon's website has the story and some great photos.

I read another interview with Yon and he said, "The UK troops are real studs. All they do is work out and fight."

kick ass.

Saw a segment about this on BBC News last week. Amazing achievement by all those involved.

A new - and sobering - post from Michael Yon, Man-Love Thursdays notwithstanding.

The second installment: porn, an (un)fortunate ricochet and Danish blow-up dolls.

The third installment: we're losing the war and France & NATO are lying to the public. For the ladies: plenty of photos of shirtless Paras wearing shorts.

French? Deceitful? Whatever next?!

I knew you'd like it. I'm more concerned about the Canadians talking about packing up and going home. Don't let them do it, Curt!

:O

Judging by what I saw on that Ross Kemp show, Michael Yon is correct and you have a right to be proud of your troops. (But they look like they could use more food - most of the men were frightfully skinny.)

I am very proud of the British units I was in combat with in Iraq: 2 Rifles, 4 Rifles, Queen's Royal Lancers, Duke of Lancasters, 2 Para (Afghanistan).

This writer would return to combat with any of these units at the drop of a hat. Big politics is one thing, but these soldiers are something that the United Kingdom should be proud of. As an American, I am proud to know them. I'll prove my point by contacting the British Army right now to request they take me back with them in combat.

We should never mix big politics with the warriors, British or American. Though it's true that the British government made some nasty mistakes, you will never hear me mumble a foul word about these soldiers.

I've got a mate who works for NATO and he told me that the situation in Afghanistan is hanging by the barest of threads. He also said if the West fails there, then the global repercussions will be double plus ungood.

He also told me what NATO stands for - Nothing After Two O'clock Laughing out loud

Other NATO nations (I'm talking about you, Germany) need to get off their asses and start fighting. And Obama needs to drastically increase troop levels above his proposals or we're in trouble.
